Review: Ocean City Municipal Golf Course

Course Name: Ocean City Municipal Golf Course

Designer: Willie Dunn Jr. (1957 or 1969)

Location: Ocean City, New Jersey

History: Apparently designed by Willie Dunn Jr. (who helped design Shinnecock…), Ocean City Muni. was built in 1957 or 1969 depending on the source.

Conditions: 2/10, while the greens are not terrible here, everything else is extremely lackluster. Several tee boxes are mats, and you almost wish the others were instead of hardpan. Bunkers are hard and close to unplayable and fairways are nonexistent.

Value: 7/10, for about $10, this short course is better than a driving range.

Scorecard:

Tee                     Par         Yardage         Rating          Slope

White               37            1560                N/A               N/A

Best Score: Unknown (White Tees), Summer 2010 by myself

Hole Descriptions: At only 65 yards, the opening hole is a simple pitch from the matted teebox. Holes 2-5 are essentially the same hole: Straightaway short par 3’s, all of them face the same direction and have a giant net on the right side to avoid hitting cars. Holes 6 and 7 are two more short par 3’s. The 8th hole is the first real hole at 175 yards with marshlands on the left side of this green. The 155 yard 9th hole is not the finishing hole, as there are 12 holes on this course. The 10th hole is the only par 4 on the course, but at only 235 yards is essentially a long par 3. Reeds line the left side of this hole while an airport runway lines the right side. I remember being terrified of hitting airplanes as I hit driver here. Holes 11 and 12 are two pretty mundane 135 yard par 3’s.

Best Par 3: 8th hole, 175 yards, 9th handicap. The longest of the par threes, this hole also features a water hazard and high dunes to the left.

Best Par 4: 10th hole, 235 yards, 1st handicap. The only par 4 on this par 37 layout, this short hole is bound on the left by reeds and the right by the local airport. Drivable for most players with driver, this hole is a good birdie opportunity for straight hitters.

General Comments: This course sees a ton of hackers and consequentially pace of play is extremely slow. There is no driving range or practice green, and the clubhouse is shared with a municipal airport.

Verdict: This course is essentially a pitch-and-putt. A good place for beginners, I cannot recommend this course for serious golfers, especially given the abundance of fantastic public courses nearby.
