Review: Playa Paraíso Golf Club

Course Name: Playa Paraíso Golf Club

Designer: P.B. Dye (2005)

Location: Riviera Maya, Mexico

History: Designed in 2005 by P.B. Dye, this resort course has since hosted the Canadian Tour, a PGA Tour Monday Qualifier, and famously Big Break Mexico. Ranked #25 in all of the Caribbean and Mexico in Golfweek’s 2016 edition, this course is one of the finest in Mexico.

Conditions: 9/10, beautifully manicured with fast greens, this course is a gem considering it’s location.

Value: 4/10, $200 in the “high season” and $130 in “low season” this course may be a bit overpriced, but it is better than Hard Rock and a resort course.

Hole Highlights: Full disclosure, I played this course when I was so young that I cannot recall most of the holes. One I distinctly remember is the short par 3 6th. While not long, this hole is enhanced by the beautiful backdrop and water fountain. Other things notable about this course are the beautiful undulations and bunkering. Also subtle but tasteful are the Mayan replica stonewall stairs leading up to the teeboxes. Thick jungles surround many of the fairways, making accuracy a must.

General Comments: The pace was brisk, and the range was expansive.

Verdict: If you’re in the area or staying at the resort, this is a definite must play. This course is simply a gem.
